Daphne Williams, a Partner at NewFields Government Services, LLC and graduate of Auburn University, proudly sits on the Geosciences Advisory Board at Auburn. Their charter as board members is to provide guidance and financial assistance to enhance educational and research capabilities, recruit exceptional students and faculty, and grow and enhance the department of Geosciences. Some highlights from this past year include awarding $6K travel grants to 24 students; supporting students and faculty for conference travel and presentations; offering $8K research grants to 8 students for their thesis work; and mentoring students through mock interviews and supporting transitions between academia and the workforce.

Additionally, for the second year in a row, graduate students from the Department of Geosciences, placed in the top three of the Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) program for the second time, also the second time in the state of Alabama’s history. GAB members have taken great pride in mentoring students as part of the IBA program. Schools from the Gulf Coast region including the states of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas compete by analyzing a dataset consisting of seismic, well logs and geochemical data for eight weeks before the official competition in Houston, TX. These graduate students collaborate and prepare a presentation that is delivered to industry experts from around the world. This year the team was provided with a dataset from off-shore New Zealand to evaluate and identify petroleum prospect in the area. We congratulate them on a job well done.

We of the GAB and NewFields Government Services, LLC are proud of all the Geosciences students and their accomplishments. They live and breathe the Auburn Creed, which reads, in part:

I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work.

I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully.

I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men.

I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities.

And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it.

George Petrie (1943)
